What is long-term care insurance?

Long-term care insurance (LTC or LTCI), an insurance product that helps provide for the cost of long-term care beyond a predetermined period. Long-term care insurance covers care generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.

What can we expect Medicare to pay for a skilled nursing facility?

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers skilled nursing care provided in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) under certain conditions for a limited time. Learn more.

What can we expect Medicare to pay for long term senior/elder care?

Long-term care is a range of services and support for your personal care needs. Most long-term care isn’t medical care. What you might mean is care in a long-term care hospital or skilled nursing facility. Learn more about your options.

What private healthcare insurance do you accept?

Do you accept patients on Medicaid?

What is skilled nursing care?

Skilled nursing is licensed, comprehensive, round-the-clock care in private or semiprivate suites. Services include: IV therapy, Post-surgical care, Wound care, Nutrition management, Orthopedic and joint replacement rehab, Post-stroke rehabilitation, Speech therapy, Occupational therapies, and more. For insurance purposes, a skilled nursing facility is a health-care institution that meets federal criteria for Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement for nursing care including especially the supervision of the care of every patient by a physician the maintenance of records concerning the patient’s care and condition.

What is an interdisciplinary rehabilitation plan?

A plan designed by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals from diverse fields who work in a coordinated fashion toward a common goal for the patient. An interprofessional team is a team of professionals who are all from the same profession, such as three physical therapists collaborating on the same case.

What is a modality in physical therapy?

It is used to relieve pain, improve circulation, decrease swelling, reduce muscle spasm, and deliver medication in conjunction with other procedures. Typical types of modalities include electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, heat, ice, and traction.

What is short wave diathermy?

Diathermy is a therapeutic treatment most commonly prescribed for joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. In diathermy, a high-frequency electric current is delivered via shortwave, microwave, or ultrasound to generate deep heat in body tissues.

What is intravenous therapy?

IV therapy is the infusion of liquid substances directly into a vein. Therapies administered intravenously are often included in the designation of specialty drugs.

What is post-acute care?

Post-acute care settings include long-term care hospitals (LTCHs), inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and home health agencies.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy provides evaluation, examination, and treatment of neurological disorders, musculoskeletal conditions, cardiac patients, wounds, and other diagnosis.  Physical therapy also provides recommendations for discharge placement assessment for the needs of assistive devices (durable equipment), and functional mobility.  The wound care team is led by a certified wound care specialist (CWS).

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy provides evaluation, examination, and treatment for activities of daily living (ADLs), adaptive equipment and durable medical equipment training, neuromuscular re-education, splint fabrication, sensory deficit compression techniques, cognitive retraining associated with ADLs and safety, and energy conservation techniques.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy provides evaluation, diagnoses, and treatment of communicative, cognitive, and linguistic disorders.  Modified barium swallow studies and bedside swallow evaluations are used to objectively asses swallowing function.

What role does Social Services play at Broadmoor Medical Center?

Our social service team assists both residents and their families during transitional periods. They also provide essential information, manage requests and concerns, help in care and discharge planning for each resident. They can arrange professional services for: Dental, Vision, Podiatry, Audiology, Power of Attorney, Dementia assessment, Psychosocial and Psychiatric Evaluation, and Individual therapy.

What is a 5-Star rating from Medicare?

Nursing home ratings come from: health inspections, staffing, quality measures. A star rating is provided for each of these 3 sources. Then, these 3 ratings are combined to calculate an overall rating. Learn more

What should we bring for a short-term rehab stay?

Prepare an inventory list of items you’re bringing with you

  • Copy of Medicare/Medicaid or insurance card
  • Medical records
  • Copies of living will and power of attorney
  • 3-4 days’ worth of comfortable clothes (there are washing facilities on location), night clothes and toiletry items
  • Something from home that might bring you comfort like a favorite quilt, photos, etc.

How long will I be here?

Length of stay is based upon your individual needs. Factors include your current physical condition, underlying medical conditions, previous levels of independence and your discharge location.

How do I find out about activities provided for the resident?

We strive to create social programs and individualized activities to match the capabilities and needs of each resident. This also has a powerful impact in the healing process of those residents involved in some type of rehabilitation. Specific activities include: active resident councils, musical performances, current events update- reading the newspaper, singing exercises, fitness activities, stretching exercises, religious meetings, outside entertainment, games, trivia, history, and volunteer involvement. We also strongly encourage families to participate with the residents in various activities.

A monthly calendar is posted to keep residents informed of upcoming events such as birthday parties, movies, musical programs, outings, candlelight dinners, ice cream socials and other special events. We always welcome friends and families to visit and attend our special events.

Do you contact my Primary Care Physician (PCP)?

Upon arrival we will let them know that their patient is at our facility and after your discharge, your PCP will receive a copy of your records from your stay with us.

How is the laundry done? Can family members take laundry home to do?

Should you wish to have Broadmoor Medical Lodge take care of the laundry please notify the front office upon admission. If a family/care giver is going to take care of the laundry at home, please let the nursing station know your plans. This way, the staff can place a sign on the closet door notifying our housekeeping staff to leave the clothing for family pick up. We request that family provide a hamper for clothes and pick it up twice a week.

All personal clothing is washed in an industrial washing machine at a temperature of 180-degrees. Make sure your loved ones’ lothing is appropriate for washing and drying in these hot temperatures. Avoid bringing clothing that requires cold or warm water, special care, or is subject to damage and fading. All clothing must be labeled. Please label the clothing with the resident’s name, NOT the room number or initials. Mark clearly and in large letters on the inside neckline or waistband. All items must be marked including socks, shoes, and other personal items.

What articles of clothing should we bring?

We recommend approximately five changes of clothing and a pair of comfortable rubber-soled shoes. All articles should be washed, clearly labeled with resident’s name in permanent ink and entered into the residents’ personal inventory log in the medical chart. Other personal items should be marked or engraved for identification. We advise that residents do not keep valuable jewelry or large amounts of cash in the facility.

Is there a limit to the number of people who can visit at one time?

Although we do not have a formal policy stating visitation guidelines, we suggest using the common areas of the facility to meet with your loved one. If it is not possible to visit in one of the common areas, we suggest a limit of one to three people in a resident room at one time.

Is there any private space available to use?

You may reserve the activities lounge for any special events (birthday, holidays, meals) with notice.

Can children visit?

We encourage children to visit, however, we ask you to alert the charge nurse to anyone visiting the facility under the age 12.

Can we bring a family pet to the facility?

We would love for your family pet to come visit. Please have appropriate documentation from the vet on file with us. Also, remember to clean up after them and take the proper safety measures at all times. All pets are to be kept on a leash and should have all current vaccinations.

What if I’m not happy with the care I’m receiving?

Our Care Confidant Program is designed to promote communication between you and staff. A staff person will be assigned to you and will check your room each day to make sure everything is clean, orderly and there are no housekeeping concerns. This person is also there to listen to what’s on your mind and if possible, resolve any concerns. This is an extra layer of care that we provide to all our guests to ensure their stay is a positive experience.

When will I receive therapy and what should I wear?

We offer physical, occupational and speech therapy throughout the week. You will be evaluated as soon as possible upon arrival and a personalized therapy plan will be designed to best meet your individual needs. Comfortable loose-fitting clothing and tennis shoes are recommended.

How do I receive my medications?

Your medications can only be ordered once you have arrived and your information entered into our system. We should have your medications 4-6 hours of your arrival. In the event you need pain control, please request pain medication to be administered 30 minutes to one hour prior to your departure from the hospital. We ask that you do not keep any medications in your room or self-medicate to avoid serious medical complications.

When will a walker be placed in my room for me to use?

Until your therapist determines that you are safe to use a walker by yourself, we encourage you to use the wheelchair provided in your room to reduce risk of falls.


When will I receive my shower?

Showers are three times a week on a rotating schedule. Please consult your nurse aid for your personal shower schedule.
